What it measures
What the test measures
Your resting metabolic rate is the number of calories your body spends just staying alive, before you have walked anywhere or done anything anyone would call exercise. Most calorie targets come from an equation that averages people who share your sex, age, height and weight, and the equation has never met your thyroid, your muscle mass, or your medication list. Measuring is the only way to know your true number.
Your result becomes the starting point for the nutrition or fitness plan our team builds for you. An endocrinologist, our dietitians, and our medical fitness trainers all read the same result before writing anything. If weight has moved to the middle in your 40s or 50s, the MRT is the first step of our perimenopause and menopause plan, where the result sets your calorie targets for the year.

Frequently asked questions

What happens at the appointment?
You sit still and relax, then breathe into a mouthpiece for about 15 minutes while the analyzer reads your oxygen and carbon dioxide. No treadmill, and nothing to prepare beyond arriving rested. A provider reviews your measured resting metabolic rate and what it means for your calorie targets.
How do I prepare?
Hold off on exercise for 12 hours before your test, and fast for 4 to 6 hours beforehand. Water is fine. No caffeine, other stimulants, or alcohol for 12 hours before. Wear something comfortable, since you will be sitting still and relaxed for the test.
What is the result used for?
Calorie targets get set to what your body actually burns, and training gets built around what you can actually recover from. Retesting shows if your metabolism is shifting as your body changes. If a plan you tried before never moved, a target set off the wrong starting number is one of the first things worth ruling out.
