Body composition testing

Body Composition Analysis in NYC

Your weight is one number. Body composition tells you what it is made of: fat, muscle, water and bone, and how each one moves between tests. A provider goes through the results with you, so you know what the numbers mean and what, if anything, to do about them.

What it measures

What a body composition analysis shows

The test is quick and nothing is injected or scanned. You stand on a medical-grade analyzer for a few minutes and it reads how much of your weight is water, lean tissue and fat, and where the fat sits. The report comes out as a page of numbers, and the visit is mostly about reading it.

Body fat percentage
How much of your weight is fat, as a share of the whole.
Lean mass
Muscle, bone and water together. This is the number that tells you whether weight lost was fat or muscle.
Visceral fat
The fat around the organs rather than under the skin, which is the kind that tends to matter more for metabolic health.
Resting energy estimate
An estimate of calories burned at rest, calculated from your lean mass. If you want that number measured rather than estimated, that is what the metabolic rate test is for.

A different test

Bone density is measured separately

Body composition analysis reads fat, muscle and water. It does not measure bone density. That takes a DEXA scan, which a medical provider orders and reads, and which we do at our Long Island City office. If bone is the question, or you are past menopause and have never had one, the place to start is a visit.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Anything else, call 718-704-5376.

What does a body composition test show?

Body fat percentage, lean mass (muscle, bone and water together), visceral fat around the organs, and an estimate of the calories you burn at rest. Taken together they tell you what your weight is made of, which the scale alone cannot.

Is body composition analysis the same as a DEXA scan?

No. A DEXA scan uses low-dose X-ray to measure bone density, and a medical provider orders it. Body composition analysis measures fat, muscle and water without any X-ray, and you can book it on its own. The two answer different questions, and some people have both.

How accurate is it?

Any single reading moves with hydration, meals and recent exercise, which is why we send preparation instructions and ask you to come in the same way each time. The number that matters most is the change between tests on the same device under the same conditions, and that is what the follow-up visits are built around.

Who goes over the results with me?

A provider sits down with you after the measurement and explains each number, what is typical for your age and sex, and what is worth acting on. If something in the report calls for a medical opinion, the dietitian can bring in one of our medical providers.

How much does a body composition analysis cost?

$195, which covers the test and the interpretation with a provider. If you would rather go through insurance, call 718-704-5376 and we will check your plan first.

Where can I get a body composition analysis in NYC?

At our Manhattan office, 235 East 38th Street, Ground Floor, and at our Long Island City office, 36-36 33rd Street, Suite 311. Book online below and the front desk confirms the office and time with you.

How often should I repeat it?

For most people, every three to six months is enough to see a real change. If you are actively working on weight, muscle or rehabilitation, your dietitian may suggest a shorter interval so the plan can be adjusted sooner.
