Metabolic Testing Q & A

What is metabolic testing?

Metabolic testing is a way to assess your body’s metabolism, the process of breaking down the calories you eat and turning them into the energy needed for everyday bodily functions. The faster your metabolism is, the more calories your body burns throughout the day, even during periods of rest.

Metabolism testing can help your wellness specialist develop custom meal and menu plans and an exercise program. These plans and programs will aid in managing your weight in a healthy way. They also improve your general health.

What are the different types of metabolic testing?

Common metabolic tests include:

Resting metabolic rate (RMR)

Your resting metabolic rate measures how many calories your body burns at rest. This differs based on the size of your body, hormone levels, muscle-to-fat ratio, and genetics.

Your neXendo Wellness specialist can use a calorimetry test, which takes 10-15 minutes. You then either breathe into a mouthpiece or recline under a plastic hood attached to a tube and monitor.

Maximum volume of oxygen (VO2 max)

You complete a VO2 max test while doing aerobic exercise. You might run, walk, or bike while breathing into a mask. You then gradually increase the intensity of your workout as the test analyzes the contrast between the amount of oxygen inhaled and carbon dioxide exhaled.

VO2 max tests help your provider estimate the number of calories you burn during exercise and while at rest.

Lactate threshold testing

During lactate threshold testing, your provider draws your blood several times during aerobic activity. You walk or run on a treadmill or ride a stationary bike during each test.

Lactate threshold testing measures the point at which lactic acid builds up in your blood faster than it’s removed during exercise, causing muscle fatigue. The test allows your specialist to plan a customized exercise program and improve your athletic performance.

What happens during and after metabolic testing?

At neXendo Wellness, we perform the RMR (resting metabolic rate) test.  You will be asked to follow the protocol prior to the test, which limits exercise, caffeine intake, food intake and stimulants. This is meant to mimic a rested state. You will sit in a comfortable position and breathe into a mouthpiece for 10-15 minutes.

Your nutrition team will then review the results with you and tailor a plan based on these results. They personalize a diet, weight loss, or exercise plan that matches your lifestyle, needs, and desired results. Your provider follows up with you in person or virtually to monitor your fitness and weight loss progress, as well as make changes to your diet and exercise regimens when needed.
